General Format Guidelines for Contributions to the Tennessee Historical Quarterly
1. Authors are encouraged to first submit abstracts or to discuss their article with the editor, Dr. Kristofer Ray. The editor prefers that all correspondence, manuscripts, and/or abstracts be sent via email, although paper copies are acceptable if computer access is limited. 2. Once accepted for publication, final manuscripts must be submitted on a PC-compatible CD using Microsoft Word 2007 or earlier version. Keep formatting to a minimum (acceptable special codes include double-spacing, paragraph indentations, and flush left). Please label the disk with the following information: author's name, title of article, its file name, and name and versions of software used. Preferred article length is approximately twenty-five pages excluding endnotes. Text and endnotes are to be double-spaced with wide margins to facilitate copy editing. Along with the disc, include two hard copies of the work. 3. For consistency, the THQ generally follows the style set forth in the Chicago Manual of Style, current edition. For matters of spelling, refer to Webster's New International Dictionary. Rely frequently on these reference aids. We will carefully and thoroughly edit your article, and prefer clear and accurate prose suitable for a broad audience. 4. Endnotes should be as concise as possible and conform to Chicago Manual style. Notes should be double-spaced. 5. All citations, quotations, proper names, figures, dates, and statements of fact should be rechecked for accuracy before the copy editing process begins. 6. In a separate computer file, the author should submit a brief career biography (about fifty words) that includes present position, educational background, principal interests and/or current research projects, and recent or forthcoming publications. (If the article is under consideration by other journals, please include names and dates of submission so that duplication of publication may be avoided.) Following this, please identify the postal address, telephone/fax number, and e-mail address you prefer the THQstaff use to communicate with you. 7. The author is strongly encouraged to include illustrations (including written permission to publish from the owner) with their work. Photographs, maps, handbills, headlines, cartoons, and works of art are effective illustrative materials. These will be returned upon request. 8. If you are interested in becoming a book reviewer for the THQ, please contact the editor, Kristofer Ray.
